A client may sometimes leave an eyelash extension session with slightly red eyes, a tingling, burning, or uncomfortable sensation.
This can be alarming, especially for a client getting extensions for the first time. But redness after an application does not automatically mean it is an allergy.
Several factors may be involved: the positioning of the eye patches, eyelid movements during the procedure, exposure to adhesive fumes, room conditions, or even the choice of products used.
The goal, as a technician, is therefore not only to know what to do when a reaction occurs: it is above all to minimize the factors likely to cause it.
Good to know: eye complications associated with extensions can notably be linked to chemical irritation, mechanical irritation caused by fixation tapes, or an allergic reaction.
1. The first point to check: the positioning of the patches
It is often the first thing I think of when a client feels discomfort during or after the service.
The patch must properly isolate the lower lashes without rubbing against the eye’s mucous membrane.
This requires real adaptation to each client's unique morphology.
Not all eyelids react the same way: some are more mobile, some are more recessed, and others exert more pressure on the patch.
And there is one element we don't always think about: the client is talking.
When she talks, laughs, or moves naturally, the eyelid can shift slightly. If the patch is too close to the eyeball, these repeated small movements can create friction on the conjunctiva and cause irritation.
Mechanical irritations linked to fixation tapes are in fact documented among the possible complications of eyelash extensions.
💡 The professional tip
When the eye's morphology or eyelid mobility makes patch positioning delicate, a small strip of medical paper tape can be used to hold or slightly lift the eyelid, depending on the needs of the procedure.
On LashBoutik, the Tabya Lashes Medical Paper Tape is specifically presented as a flexible tape that can be used to secure patches or lift the eyelid.
The site also offers an Eyelid Lifting Patch, designed to facilitate this type of adjustment.
👉 The principle is simple: the patch must remain comfortable, stable, and far enough from the mucous membrane so as not to create friction.
And above all, do not just place the patches at the beginning of the procedure: check their positioning.
2. Eyes perfectly closed throughout the entire application
The second essential point concerns the closing of the eyelids.
During a procedure, the eyes must remain completely closed.
Why?
Because the adhesive used for eyelash extensions releases volatile compounds during polymerization. Exposure of the ocular surface to these fumes can contribute to irritation. Cyanoacrylate-based adhesives polymerize quickly in the presence of humidity, and their behavior depends notably on temperature and humidity conditions.
This is why it is important to regularly check that the client is not slightly lifting their eyelids.
💬 And this is where communication with the client becomes important
A client may talk during the procedure without realizing their eyelids are moving.
Therefore, do not hesitate to explain simply to her:
“For your comfort and to prevent glue fumes from irritating your eyes, try to keep your eyes firmly closed throughout the procedure.”
A few seconds of explanation can prevent a lot of discomfort.
3. The choice of adhesive: not all glues behave the same way
The choice of glue must be adapted to the technician's work speed, their environment, and the needs of their client.
Some glues are designed with lower vapor release and can be advantageous when seeking greater comfort for sensitive clients.
For example, The My O'mega Glue offers excellent retention of 4 to 9 weeks depending on humidity conditions, the preparation of the natural lash, and the client's maintenance. Its low vapor release improves comfort during the service while ensuring powerful adhesion.
The Tabya ICONIC, meanwhile, allows for controlled application without overloading the base of the extensions. Its low vapor release improves comfort during application while maintaining a solid and durable bond.
⚠️ Warning: a so-called “comfort” glue does not mean “risk-free”
A glue intended for sensitive eyes remains a professional adhesive.
You must respect its method of use, setting speed, and the conditions recommended by the manufacturer.
Choosing a low-vapor glue can help improve comfort, but it will never compensate for poor patch positioning or improper eyelid closure.
4. Properly preparing the natural lash with the Primer
Before the application, the preparation of the natural lash is also essential.
The Tabya Lashes Primer available on LashBoutik is designed to remove oil residue and prepare the lash surface to optimize glue adhesion.
Proper preparation allows you to work on a clean base and promotes consistent adhesive setting.
The idea is not to “use more glue to make sure it holds.”
On the contrary:
suitable preparation + the right amount of adhesive + controlled work speed = a cleaner, better-controlled application.
5. Mastering polymerization until the end of the service
![]()
Even when the application is finished, the technician’s work does not necessarily end at the last lash.
Adhesive polymerization must be properly controlled.
This is precisely where a product like the Tabya Lashes Lash Bonder Mist can fit into the protocol.
The goal is to integrate this step into a coherent protocol: designed to support the final setting of the extensions and limit exposure to residual adhesive fumes. It is used at a distance, on closed eyes, after application. Without risk of contact with the eyes, this bonder stops adhesive fumes, ensuring an irritation-free experience for the client.
preparation → application → polymerization → finish.
This is not a product to be used to compensate for poor mastery of the glue: it complements a correctly executed protocol.
6. What about the temperature and humidity of the room?
This is an often underestimated element.
Adhesives for eyelash extensions are sensitive to environmental conditions. Temperature and, above all, humidity influence their polymerization speed.
A room that is too hot, too cold, too dry, or too humid can therefore alter how the glue behaves.
Things to monitor in the salon:
- 🌡️ room temperature;
- 💧 humidity level;
- ❄️ air conditioning blowing directly toward the client;
- 🌬️ drafts;
- 🔄 room ventilation;
- 🧴 glue storage conditions;
- ⏱️ setting speed of the adhesive used.
There is no “universal” temperature and humidity valid for all glues.
The conditions indicated by your adhesive manufacturer must always be the reference.
7. What if the client leaves with red eyes?
First thing: do not panic.
Slight redness may correspond to irritation of the ocular surface and may gradually improve after the service.
One prospective study observed frequent ocular symptoms in the first hours following an application, with an evolution of ocular surface parameters in the following days.
But it is important not to make a diagnosis yourself.
The professional can explain to the client that several mechanisms are possible: mechanical irritation, irritation linked to fumes, or a reaction to a product.
She must then monitor the evolution of the symptoms.
💧 And to soothe a feeling of dryness or discomfort?
When the discomfort corresponds to mild irritation or dry eyes, tear substitutes, ideally preservative-free, can be used. The French National Health Insurance (Assurance Maladie) website notably recommends preservative-free artificial tears for certain conjunctival irritations linked to mild to moderate dryness, with the advice of a pharmacist.
In practice, rather than prescribing eye drops herself, the technician can advise her client to seek advice from her pharmacist, especially if she feels dryness, tingling, or persistent discomfort.
⏱️ 24 to 48 hours: monitor the progress
In cases of mild irritation, one can observe a gradual decrease in redness and discomfort.
But 24 to 48 hours should not be presented as a guaranteed timeframe.
What counts above all is the evolution:
✅ The situation is reassuring if:
the discomfort and redness are decreasing gradually.
⚠️ You must seek medical advice if:
the redness persists without improvement, worsens, or if new symptoms appear.
🚨 Seek immediate medical attention in case of:
- significant pain;
- vision loss or changes;
- extreme light sensitivity;
- significant swelling;
- persistent sensation of a foreign body;
- rapid worsening of symptoms.
Redness accompanied by vision loss or significant pain may be an ophthalmological emergency.
The professional must never attempt to diagnose the cause: her role is to prevent, observe, reassure, and refer when necessary.
🌿 What if it’s an allergy?
That is a different subject.
An allergy to the adhesive components or products used around the eye can notably cause itching, redness, tearing, or eyelid swelling. It can also appear after several services without any prior reaction.
Mechanical irritation or irritation linked to fumes is therefore not the same thing as an allergy.
This is a subject important enough to deserve its own article.

✨ In summary: good reflexes for the Lash Artist
To reduce the risk of discomfort or redness after a service, think about your protocol as a whole :
1. Adapt the patches to the eye’s morphology.
2. Verify that they do not rub the mucous membrane.
3. Use a support tape if necessary to adjust the eyelid.
4. Verify that the eyes remain perfectly closed.
5. Choose a glue adapted to your work speed and your client’s needs.
6. Properly prepare the lashes with a suitable Primer.
7. Control the temperature and humidity of your workspace.
8. Follow the polymerization protocol and use a bonder if your protocol requires it.
9. Listen to the client throughout the service.
10. In case of unusual or persistent symptoms, know how to refer to a healthcare professional.Because a professional service is not judged solely by the beauty of the application.
It is also judged by the client's comfort, the mastery of your protocol, and your ability to anticipate the small details that make all the difference.
